Hubballi’s HCG Suchirayu Hospital Performs North Karnataka’s First Orbital Atherectomy
Hubballi: In a remarkable medical achievement, HCG Suchirayu Hospital, Hubballi, has become the first center in North Karnataka to use the Diamondback 360™ Coronary Orbital Atherectomy System (OAS) by Abbott, a cutting-edge device designed to treat heavily calcified coronary arteries.
A 70-year-old male patient, with a history of diabetes and hypertension, suffered an anterior wall myocardial infarction (MI). Despite being thrombolysed and undergoing a pharmacoinvasive procedure at another cardiac center, the presence of dense calcium prevented successful stenting. The patient was referred to HCG Suchirayu Hospital for further treatment.
The medical team lead by cardiologist Dr Ameet G Sattur, Dr NS Hiregoudar employed the Orbital Atherectomy device, which is specifically designed to modify calcified tissue. The 1.25 mm diamond-coated crown of the system erodes hard calcium into fine particles, ensuring that the stent can be correctly positioned and properly apposed to the blood vessel wall, minimizing future complications.
This remarkable achievement marks the hospital as the first in the region to utilize both Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) and Orbital Atherectomy, two state-of-the-art calcium modulating techniques, in complex cardiac interventions.
